In a recent post on this blog, I talked about the idea of “recaps” in fiction: pausing the action after a major event to fill the reader in on how the protagonist is feeling.
A couple of readers of this blog pointed out that this sounded a lot like Jack Bickham’s idea of “scene and sequel,” which he presented in his craft-of-fiction manual, Scene and Structure.
I have now read Scene and Structure. Woah! It’s quite a book. I found it very insightful, very challenging. Although I wrestled with Bickham in a few places, I would love to teach a writing course with his book as the initial textbook.
I’m going to write a full review soon: I hope to have it ready before Christmas (where has the month gone?).
Best wishes to you all
