(I wrote a piece specifically for the night–no one has seen it yet, so I have no idea how it will go down. One of the troubles of working on novels is that you spend so long with so little to show, and so, when Grist invited me to read on the theme of “Flight,” I was happy to write something new. I have 8 minutes to read, so I dreamed up a four-page story called “Leonardo's Helicopters,” which is actually three interwoven stories, each of them three paragraphs long. It's about Leonardo Da Vinci, Sigmund Freud's theory of dreams, and studying Spanish in Guatemala. It may well be completely unintelligible…)
